2013 Round Up

It's been another busy and brilliant year over in the Full Thought camp. 2013 has seen us sign a bunch of talented, unique and gifted artists including Ty, Harleighblu, Peshay, Youngblood Brass BandJo HarmanMark Professor/Rongorock, Lost Midas, Renegade Brass Band, Titeknots, Dizz1, Werkha, Kalbata and we've also signed the rights to The London Posse's seminal Gangsta Chronicles album.

Alongside all the new music we've signed we've been securing some high profile syncs for a number of artists on the roster. Alice Russell's new album 'To Dust' has been garnering heaps of attention, in the last year Alice's tracks have been synced to US shows such as Blacklist (twice!), The Client List, Switched At Birth, Mixology and Ray Donovan. Not only was this great for Alice's US profile, but it also produced a huge spike in sales for the music.

Quantic and the Hot 8 Brass Band featured heavily in the BBC's coverage of the Confederations Cup Final, which was viewed by massive 3.5 million people in the UK alone. Flevans secured an extended sync with UK DFS adverts on both TV and radio, and Belleruche took their music to new territories with a slick advert for Hyundai in South Korea.

It's great to see our artists being recognised for their music, recently The Hot 8 Brass Band were nominated for their first Grammy in the 'Best Regional Roots Music Album' category, for their album 'The Life and Times Of...'. Jo Harman has had an extremely busy year and to top it off she's been  named Breakout Artist of the Year by the highstreet magazine Classic Rock & Blues, her album also received acclaim from various other publications:  ★★★★ - The Mirror, "Stunning…our tip for 2013" - The Blues Magazine (9 out of 10) and "A must hear album" - Jazz FM. Wrongtom's imprint also go into the end of year lists with Mark Professor's excellent track 'Oystah Card' landing 4th place in MOJO magazine top tracks of the year (alongside Daft Punk, Arctic Monkeys, Disclosure and David Bowe!).

Also, we recently launched our new website, so pop on over and marvel at the swish new layout: http://www.fullthought.co.uk/

2014 looks set to be another stellar year, with new music and releases from Quantic, Nostalgia 77, Wrongtom, Lost Midas, Lanu, Ty, Werkha and Dizz1. We've also got a joint 15th birthday to celebrate with Tru Thoughts, so pop down to London's Koko in February and have a party with us (http://www.soundcrashmusic.com/tru-thoughts-15th-birthday/).

As always, drop us an email if you have an inquiries about the catalogue or would like to use one of our tracks.

We hope you have a great Christmas and New Year.

OUT TODAY: Peshay - Generation

Drum 'n' Bass veteran Peshay has a new album out today on Tru Thoughts. 'Generation' is a fresh sound for Peshay as he experiments with live funk, jazz and tropical compositions in a vibrant new direction. The album has already received support from big names such as Gilles Peterson and Craig Charles on BBC 6Music, and excited reactions from seasoned tastemakers worldwide including Sinden, Danny Krivit and Ashley Beedle.

Inspired by his lifelong love of all sorts of sounds from jazz and disco to funk, house and Latin American music, this new material finds the London based producer using only live musicians, each of whom bring a little of their own style, and creating an evocative world within each track. While some of his previous releases – most notably his highly acclaimed 1999 debut LP ‘Miles From Home’ - hint at this wider spectrum of influences, this is the first time that Peshay has produced a full album that gives no clues as to his drum ‘n’ bass stalwart status.

“Maybe it will be a shock for some people,” says Paul Pesce, the man behind the moniker; “but I love different styles and don't want to only make drum and bass. Tru Thoughts is a fantastic platform for me to express myself in a different way, and I look forward to doing more eclectic productions as well as more drum and bass in future.”

Full Thought are publishing this new Peshay material, so get in touch if you're interested in using any of it - mail@fullthought.co.uk

The Hot 8 Brass Band nominated for Grammy!

It's big news, The Hot 8 Brass Band have been nominated for a Grammy! Their recent album, 'The Life & Times Of...', is up for the 'Best Regional Roots Music Album'. For anyone unfamiliar with the band, the Hot 8 are New Orleans’ premier purveyors of roof raising, jazz infused, funk and hip hop fuelled marching band music, straight from the heart and fresh from the second line parades.

Having appeared in Spike Lee’s original post-Katrina documentary When the Levees Broke, Hot 8 also featured in the follow-up, When the Creek Don’t Rise; and HBO recently included their remarkable story in the hit Treme television series. In addition to their lifelong affinity with their instruments, Hot 8 Brass Band boast a rare depth of vocal talent to illuminate their tales, and ‘The Life And Times Of…’ finds them exploring this further; switching from commanding, funky lead vocals, to rapped verses laid down with passion and skill, to melodic hooks and harmonies – that range from emotive, gravelly baritones through instinctively whooped falsettos – with abandon.

The "Life & Times Of..." was the first installment of a 2 album campaign; the following album, 'Tombstone', is a more reflective record, an emotional tribute to fallen band members and the funeral parades which centres on this music. “These two records will celebrate the times we have had both before and after the storm. Burying our dead and letting their spirits soar, celebrating our city and the lives that our band mates have lived individually and collectively as Hot 8,” explains band leader and tuba player Bennie Pete.

Congratulations to Benny and the whole band!

It's big news for Jo Harman this week as she features heavily in Classic Rock & Blues Magazine's 'Best of 2013' (alongside many big names including Gary Clarke Jr), she topped the list as Breakout Artist of the year in the influential UK high street magazine. 2013 has been a busy year for Jo as she played over 40 UK and European festival shows in 2013, including prestigious slots at Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival and this summer she was one of only 12 (otherwise household name) artists appearing at Parkpop in the Hague, performing to over 300,000 people. Last month she performed at the BluesFest at The Royal Albert Hall in London for Live Nation (recorded for future broadcast by Radio 2 and Radio 6 Music).

Oystah Card in Mojo's Top 10 Tracks of 2013

This month's copy of Mojo includes their annual rundown of the best albums and tracks of the year, and in brilliant taste they have placed Mark Professor's Oystah Card at number 4 in the top 10 tracks. The rousing dancehall anthem is placed between David Bowie, Daft Punk, Arctic Monkeys and Disclosure. Oystah Card is an ode to London’s sprawling public transport system, taking you on a bumpy journey across town, through tubes and down bus lanes til the Prof winds up at Wrongtom’s studio where he wrote the final verse on the spot.

Mojo aren't the only ones praising the track, these industry experts also jumped in:

“As a card carrying member and a bass-line defender I can highly recommend Mark Professor’s Oystah Card....Top Up!” Don Letts (BBC 6Music)

"An original, unique flavour." David Rodigan (BBC 1Xtra)

“Sweet Smiley Culture style celebration of modern mobility.” John Kennedy (Xfm)

NEW SIGNING: Werkha

Full Thought are very pleased to announce the signing of Werkha, the project of musician and producer Tom A. Leah. After a big year in which his reputation has swiftly spread, this rising talent has now signed to Tru Thoughts and is putting the finishing touches to a clutch of new tunes to be released in 2014.

Since Werkha unleashed his debut ‘Cube & Puzzle’ EP on Cool Kid Music, in September 2012, the release has become something of an underground sensation, enjoying airplay throughout Europe, most notably from Gilles Peterson - who included one of his tracks on Brownswood Bubblers 10.

Hailing from Manchester, Leah began feeding his musical passions with classical, folk, and jazz music as a youngster. After leaving the bricks of Manchester for the sticks of Cumbria, a subsequently well-travelled childhood exposed him to a vibrant landscape of varied musical styles. This has clearly been manifested in the sound he has harnessed as Werkha. If you have yet to sample the delights, expect to hear an infectious fusion of Afrobeat, bass, house, jazz, funk and soul, bound together and brought bang up to date through contemporary electronic production that never stands still.

It’s important to switch tempos around, keep things moving, and bring something different to everyone”, Leah enthuses.

Werkha cites physical instrumentation, and his own live recordings, as the essential ingredient that gives his sound its consistent energy and unique identity. More recent productions further explore this live instrumentation and point towards a more layered sound that is set to characterise future works. Through all this, Werkha retains the electronic contiguity that led to ‘Cube & Puzzle’ ruffling the feathers of so many luminaries of the dance world.

With a successful 2013 under his belt, and a new label base, watch this space for the rise and rise of Werkha.

If you're interested in using some of Werkha's material then get in touch - mail@fullthought.co.uk

The Bamboos' Fever In The Road - OUT TODAY (AUS)

Today marks the release of The Bamboos sixth album 'Fever In The Road' in Australia and New Zealand. The album showcases the band's innate ability to create infectious and melodic soul with a flourish of pop. While still retaining the feel good nature that has been a staple of their music, The Bamboos have adopted darker elements to their music in this release, with densely layered strings, organs, synths and guitar to add depth to the music. Explaining the new album, Lance Ferguson states that "“I always want to make a better record, a different record. The Bamboos had their roots in certain genres but now it's been blown wide open. Now it feels like we can go in many directions...our direction...". The album is set to be released by Sony in Europe and Nettwerk in the US, Canada and Mexico early next year.

This album follows on from the band’s breakthrough 2012 album ‘Medicine Man’, which garnered them three ARIA Award nominations (Best Independent Release, Best Urban Album & Best Live Act), and saw the single “I Got Burned” feat. Tim Rogers reach #54 in Triple J’s Hottest 100.

Full Thought publish all of the Bamboos back catalogue and are extremely pleased to be publishing the new release too, if you're interested in using any of the material then please get in touch - mail@fullthought.co.uk

Quantic's Muevelo Negro / Nanguita - OUT TODAY

Today marks the release of 'Muevelo Negro / Nanguita', a new single from Quantic, always a cause for excitement among the intrepid followers of dance music’s worldly evolution. On this new material, prolific and influential producer/musician Quantic collaborates with Colombian singer Nidia Góngora (who also features in his Combo Bárbaro and Ondatrópica groups) for a progressive and experimental take on the Pacific music of Colombia. Dance led and rhythmically complex, this modern take on a folkloric tradition brings a deep and cutting edge club sound.

Both songs here are original compositions and direct collaborations between Quantic and Nidia Góngora. The use of a female vocal chorus, percussion from the region, and a Marimba accompaniment, adds to the colour of the sound and tips it more towards a pacific sound palette.

These two songs are a taste of the sound that Quantic and Nidia Góngora are currently exploring in the development of her upcoming debut solo album. Góngora’s songwriting talent, live presence and truly distinctive voice have made her a rising star.

Quantic is currently putting the finishing touches to a new solo album for Tru Thoughts. A hugely anticipated release, this upcoming LP will be his first studio album under the ‘Quantic’ name in over six years, following an experimental period which has borne various commercially and critically successful projects including Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, Ondatrópica and of course the 2012 Quantic and Alice Russell collaborative opus ‘Look Around The Corner’.

Peshay's Generation EP - OUT TODAY

It's landed, new music from the legendary Peshay is now out for your listening pleasure. Following a string of celebrated releases for the likes of Island and Metalheadz, drum ‘n’ bass legend Peshay turns his midas touch to live funk, jazz and tropical compositions in a vibrant new direction. The “Generation EP, out now, lifts the lid on three tracks ahead of the full album of the same name, which follows in December.

EP opener, “Seville”, brings a carnivalesque, Latin-inspired sound; at seven-plus minutes, and with strong instrumental hooks, punchy production and a stripped back simplicity it is an out-and-out party tune. Coming over like a lost ‘70s film soundtrack, “Midnight Express” takes things in a decidedly funk-fuelled direction; cutting together archive session recordings from live musicians at various times, Peshay has managed to create the suspenseful, driving frisson of a tight group of players jamming live and in-the-moment. “Kickin’ It With The Piano Trio” is a live, expressive freeform jazz jam that spirals into a snaking, swinging groove with propulsive drums. The impeccable musicianship comes care of Munich-based funk/jazz group Tounion, whom Peshay approached with collaboration in mind after hearing them in a club and being blown away.

Full Thought are extremely please to be publishing this new material for Peshay so get in touch if you're interested in using any of it - mail@fullthought.co.uk

You can go and grab the EP now from all good digital stores including:

Belleruche's Best Of - 'OUT TODAY'

Belleruche's ‘Best Of’ is a double CD collection bringing together 28 tracks from across the London trio’s four acclaimed albums, as well as carefully selected remixes and B-sides. On the eve of this milestone release, Belleruche have announced that they are saying farewell, or at least, “see you in a bit”; the close-knit trio have decided to pursue individual creative and personal avenues after eight hardworking, exhilarating and globetrotting years of Belleruche.

Anyone unfamiliar with Belleruche's sound is certain to pick up on their distinctive and innovative style from this compilation. From party rocking, dusty turntable soul anthems such as “Minor Swing” that predated and predicted electro-swing fever, and the laid back hip hop jazz of “Northern Girls” (which has had over 1 million YouTube hits); through distorted bluesy guitar pop outings like BBC 6Muisic Rebel Playlist winner “Fuzz Face”, to latter day forays into delicate and dark, intricately crafted electronica; the twin constants at the heart of Belleruche’s music are irresistibly catchy melodies and genuine raw soul.

Belleruche haven't just been popular with their fans, they've been a firm favorite of many sync agencies with their track Northern Girls being picked for Mercedes 125th year worldwide anniversary advert, which can be seen below.

You can grab it from iTunes, Juno or direct from Etch Shop

Harleighblu debut album 'Forget Me Not' - OUT TODAY

Forget Me Not’ is the debut album from Harleighblu, a truly distinctive 21-year-old singer who is attracting a mass of tastemaker love, and a spiralling fanbase, for her deep and edgy hip hop-infused soul music - The album is out today on Tru Thoughts Records.

The album is a collection of songs about love and life through the eyes of a young artist with, in her own words, an “old soul”. The incredible tonal range and depth in Harleighblu’s voice is out there from the spine-tingling groove of opener “Enough Now”; shades of Amy Winehouse’s influence show through in the bitter-sweet vocal tone of “Casanova”. The wide-eyed youthful idealism of “I Believe” could melt the most cynical old heart; while a cover of Eurythmics’ “Who’s That Girl” – which recently received its first airplay on Jo Whiley’s BBC Radio 2 show - highlights the maturity and class in Harleighblu’s armoury, as she flips this classic into a loping and funky, dub-tinged cut, galvanizing the emotional suspense of the original in a truly singular vocal turn.

Her album launch is this Thursday 17th at the Queen Of Hoxton, be quick if you want tickets and head to the Soundcrash Website for more info.

Quantic and Alice Russell - I'd Cry / Here Again - OUT NOW

I’d Cry”/”Here Again” is the third single to be taken from the ‘Look Around The Corner’ album by Quantic and Alice Russell with the Combo Bárbaro. As a special treat for the fans and wax collectors, this double A-side single has been pressed onto a beautiful, teardrop shaped translucent blue vinyl.

The ‘Look Around The Corner’ LP came out in 2012, marking the first full collaborative album from musical soulmates Quantic and Alice Russell, two of the UK’s best loved independent artists and leading lights of the international funk, soul and alternative dance music scene. Testament to its massive crossover appeal, the accolades for the album include BBC 6Music Album of the Day and praise in the likes of Q, Uncut, The Arts Desk, Songlines, BBC Music, Clash, Wax Poetics; and it has gone on to sell 25,000 copies and counting.

“I’d Cry” is a modern take on seventies soul ballads, on which Russell’s heartfelt candy-laced vocals play bittersweet call-and-response with gypsy-folk violins and the dancing piano keys of Alfredito Linares, one of the musical stars of the record. Gracing the flip-side is “Here Again”, another original Quantic and Alice composition from the album, showcasing the sheer depth and quality of this musical pairing – from Quantic’s trademark fingerpicked guitar hook and feather-light production, laced with a breezy and tropical Latin flavour, to the blues and gospel inspired lyrics.

Full Thought publish all of the original material on Look Around The Corner, so drop us an email if you're interested in using any of it - mail@fullthought.co.uk

Grab a copy of the vinyl from your local record shop or visit the Etch Shop for a copy.

The next installment of Ty's "Kick Snare And An Idea” (#AKSAAI) is out now on Tru Thoughts. The second of two singles by Ty, this package brings two more new songs.

The opening track is “Let’s Start” (added to both MTV Base and BBC 6 Music playlists); the last single announced Ty’s bold intentions, and this track continues the proactive, frank and forward-looking message that has captured the public’s attention. The theme is set over a unique groove, a built-up arrangement that is neither fast nor slow, cuts are provided by Harry Love.

Marcus Intalex - META008 now out on Metalheadz

Marcus Intalex signals his long overdue return with META008 which features both “Riots” & “Hell To Pay", two outings that illustrate why Marcus is still deservedly regarded as one of the Drum and Bass scene's most important ambassadors. Marcus' productions are renowned for pushing boundaries whilst retaining broad appeal, an innovator and a pioneer of the genre.

Riots” kicks things off with a driving, gritty hard-edged dark stepper carried perfectly by a heavy helping of splashy rides and low-end grunt, steadily building and rolling in combination to devastating effect Marcus provides a soundscape which is reflective of the title itself. A tune that looks back to London’s troublesome past by taking “Riots” of the streets and transferring them straight to the dance floor.

Hell to Pay” features a very healthy nod to the past in bang up to minute standard. All of the golden elements are here that defined the early tech era – Heavy tech stabs, plenty of reese and a massive helping of live drums – Everything that is right about this sound is found right here in perfect balance. Elements that are tried tested and in this case perfect!

You can listen to the tracks below, then head out to your nearest record store or head to the Metalheadz Shop. Full Thought publish Marcus Intalex and his house leaning alias Trevino, so get in touch if you're interested in using any of his material - mail@fullthought.co.uk

The Hot 8 Brass Band - Tombstone OUT TODAY

Out now, ‘Tombstone’ is Hot 8 Brass Band’s third LP. The second installment in a two-album set, it closely follows it’s counterpoint to the straight-up party side of the band showcased on ‘The Life & Times Of…’. Thematically a more sombre, emotional record, it presents another chapter in the history of the Hot 8 Brass Band – a new window onto the lives, the friendships, the heartbreaks, the roots and culture of New Orleans brass music and its players. The majority of the songs are personal dedications, in memory of the four Hot 8 band members, and other musicians and dear friends, who have passed away. And those that aren’t dedication songs are new, original Hot 8 jams, party tunes that remind us – and the band – of why the music is worth it all; setting the scene for where the band are at today, while their city and its people still bear the scars of Hurricane Katrina, and where they are carrying the spirit next.
